15. Fran Tarkenton

One of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time was pretty good in Season 2 of SNL. Even though it was early in the show’s history, Tarkenton started out strong with the locker room skit before his monologue, which poked fun at his inability to win a championship as well as the heroic image of athletes.

Tarkenton was one of the toughest football players of his time, an era where professional football was defined by heroes like Jack Youngblood, who very literally broke a leg and still played throughout the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

The most memorable skit of Tarkenton’s hosting was based on something akin to that story, in which a football player has his arm ripped off and his coach tells him to tape it up and get back in there.
