The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Recap – 3-21

Fallon and the gang kicked off the week with a strong show with Jake Gyllenhaal and Pee Wee Herman himself Paul Reubens. The return of the popular “Point Pleasant Police Department,” where Jimmy and his guest spit food all over each other, also happened. Here’s the full recap of Monday’s show.

Monologue

Jimmy kicked off the monologue with some jokes about President Obama’s historic visit to Cuba this week. Trump commented on the visit stating that the president was disrespected when he wasn’t greeted at the airport by Cuba’s president Raul Castro. Jimmy joked that he can’t even get his best friend to pick him up from the airport, so why should the president of a country that has been an enemy of the U.S. for 40 years greet an American at the airport. He has a point. Jimmy moved on to the news about Hulk Hogan’s recent windfall of $115 million lawsuit with Gawker. The joke: Gawker is appealing the ruling, which is more than we can say about the Hulk Hogan sex tape. Zing! A goalie in a Canadian hockey league scored a goal in an open net. Fallon played the clip of the commentator’s reaction. It was high-pitched jubilation.

To The Desk

The popular website Mashable posted a list of hairstyles that Fallon could pull off. Fallon showed a couple of them. Most of them were ridiculous like a replication of Justin Bieber’s haircut, and one with curly locks. He took a liking to one called “nod to the rod” which was basically just a Rod Stewart haircut. Fallon liked it so much he was introduced for a second time by Higgins and stormed out with the a Rod Stewart wig and a key-tar.

The Guests

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jimmy started things off by complimenting Jake on his career and whole look. Jimmy wanted to know about a time when things didn’t work out perfectly for Jake. So he shared a story when he bombed his audition for The Lord of the Rings. Apparently he auditioned for the role of Froto. He didn’t know he was supposed to have a British accent. He also didn’t get a part for Dude, Where’s My Car. Jake was there to promote his new movie Demolition, in which he sets out to destroy all of his worldly possessions. The previews make it look pretty intense.

Point Pleasant Police Department

This recurring bit is one of my favorites. It debuted with guest Jon Hamm last year. Jimmy and his guest play police partners on a fictitious TV show. The duo stuffs their faces with mess food and beverages, which they end up spitting all over each other. This one was particularly excellent and disgusting. Check out the clip below.

Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens is promoting the new Pee Wee’s Holiday which is now streaming on Netflix. Jimmy congratulated Paul on the return of Pee Wee and all of the famous moves and catch phrases. Paul shared some of his favorite Pee Wee lines from over the years. He was surprisingly reserved for the interview. He’s so different from his high energy alter ego of Pee Wee. He ended the interview with a new funny bit that Pee Wee does in the movie: he plays the balloon. It was as ridiculous as it sounds.

Monday’s episode of Fallon concluded with a performance by Rita Wilson. Check back tomorrow for a full recap of Tuesday’s show when Fallon welcomes Don Cheadle.
