Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver returns to The Daily Show tonight, February 27th

John Oliver returns to The Daily Show as a guest for the first time with Trevor Noah as host.
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver is briefly returning to the show he worked on for seven years tonight as he appears as a guest on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. In fact, it will not only be his first major appearance since Noah succeeded Jon Stewart as host of the Comedy Central program, but it will also mark the first time ever that he serves as the main guest on the show, though he’s popped up several times since leaving the satirical series in 2013, including during Stewart’s final episode two years later.
Oliver also appeared during a special edition of The Daily Show just ahead of the 2016 presidential election where he was seen being deported as part of a dystopian vision of a potential Donald Trump presidency. The HBO host was seen being dragged away by authorities in the middle of a segment on egg safety (starting around the 3:15 mark):

Though Oliver has mostly stayed away from The Daily Show until now, he has consistently appeared on other later-night shows the past few years, including multiple appearances alongside his former colleague Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, in addition to Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Oliver was once thought to be a natural replacement for Stewart after he received universal praise while subbing for the comedian in the summer of 2013 when he was out directing Rosewater. However, the British comic was quickly poached by HBO to host his own show before Stewart announced his retirement in 2015.
Oliver’s Daily Show appearance will reportedly come the same night that Stewart is returning to The Late Show, on which he serves as executive producer. They both come at a time when most of the politically oriented late-night shows are getting a ratings boost thanks to the Trump administration, with The Daily Show and Late Show recently getting their best numbers in some time, while Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal is attracting some of its highest ratings ever thanks in part to a change in time slot, as well as the current political environment.
To promote The Daily Show’s return after a brief hiatus, the show created a short promo where it dubbed the program “The Real Fake News.”
